Notes on the light
The Maybourne is a hotel rather than a garden, and that changes how you film it. Most of the day happens inside or under cover, so the light is architectural: chandeliers, warm stone, tall windows and a ballroom designed to look good after dark. That is a feature, not a limitation. It means the look of your film does not depend on what the sky is doing, and it means the evening footage has real warmth in it instead of the flat wash you get in a tent.
The spaces, and how they film
The Ballroom. Five thousand square feet of Spanish-inspired room with opera balconies and chandeliers overhead. The balconies are the useful part: they give us height, so a reception can be shot from above as well as across, and the room reads as grand rather than boxy.
Alexa and Jonathan's reception filled it with ring chandeliers and a canopy of hanging ivy, which is worth noting because the ceiling height is what makes that possible. Rooms this tall are rare in Los Angeles hotels, and they are what let a florist build upward instead of only across the tables.
The Terrace, tented. Jonathan and Alexa were married under a clear-roofed tent pitched on the hotel terrace, draped in white with chandeliers over a wooden aisle. It is the single smartest thing you can do at this property in winter: you get daylight through the roof, you are shielded from the weather, and the ceremony sits a short walk from the ballroom. On a wet December afternoon it read as intentional rather than as a backup plan.
The Terrace and Beverly Canon Gardens. Untented, the Terrace looks out over the gardens next door, where white parasols and a cascading fountain do a very convincing European piazza. It is the best open-air frame on the property and the natural spot for a cocktail hour.
The Canon Drive Arrival. The entrance is covered, which sounds mundane until it rains. Arrivals, exits and that first look down the drive all stay filmable in any weather, and the stone facade takes light beautifully in the evening.
The films, so far
We have made one film at The Maybourne: Jonathan & Alexa, on a day that rained from start to finish. It turned out to be the best possible test of the property, and one of our favorite films of the year. One wedding is enough to learn a hotel's rhythm: which rooms hold light, where the covered frames are, how long it takes to move a hundred and fifty people. The second is always better, and we would like it to be yours.
Filming a hotel wedding
Hotels get an unfair reputation among couples who assume outdoor venues photograph better. In practice a property like this one solves more problems than it creates: everything sits within a short walk, so almost no time is lost in transit and more of the day ends up in the film. Nothing hinges on the forecast. And the rooms were designed to look good under their own light, which means the evening is not a lighting rescue mission.
What we would push for here is a portrait window that gets you outside for fifteen minutes, whatever the weather. Jonathan and Alexa did exactly that in a downpour with a clear umbrella, and those are the frames from their film that people remember.
