Notes on filming Malibu

Malibu is two places and they film nothing alike. The coast side is bright, hazy and reflective, with the marine layer sitting on it most mornings and burning off somewhere between eleven and two. Nobody can tell you which. Plan the ceremony for the afternoon and you are working with soft, even light off the water instead of gambling on a burn-off that may not come.

The canyon side is the opposite problem. Inland of Pacific Coast Highway the ranches sit in folds of the Santa Monica Mountains, which means the sun disappears behind a ridge well before the published sunset. At Calamigos the useful light is gone from the grove long before it is gone from the sky. That is not a small difference on a timeline, it is often forty minutes, and it is the single thing couples get wrong when they plan a Malibu wedding from a sunset app.

The other Malibu constant is wind. It comes up off the water in the afternoon and funnels through the canyons, and it is a gift for picture and a problem for sound. We solve it at the microphone and then use it in front of the lens.

Timing a Malibu wedding

Work backwards from the ridge, not from sunset. On the canyon properties, ask your planner what time the sun clears the western ridge in your month, and treat that as your real sunset. A ceremony two hours before it leaves a genuine golden hour with the couple already married. On the coast side, the published sunset holds, and the last thirty minutes over open water are the best of the day.

Questions, answered

Do you film weddings in Malibu?

Often. We have made eleven films across four Malibu venues: Calamigos Ranch, Cielo Farms, Saddlerock Ranch and Villa Francesca. Each has its own page of filming notes on this site, written from the days we spent there.

When is the best light in Malibu?

It depends which side of Pacific Coast Highway you are on. On the coast, the last half hour over open water, after the marine layer has lifted. In the canyons, earlier than you think, because the ridge takes the sun long before the horizon does. We plan the two completely differently.

What about the marine layer?

It sits on the coast most mornings and usually lifts by early afternoon, but not always and not on schedule. That is the argument for an afternoon ceremony rather than a late morning one. When it does hang around, it works as an enormous softbox and faces look better than they do in hard sun, so it is rarely the disaster couples fear.

Do you charge travel to Malibu?

No. Malibu is inside our home range as a Los Angeles studio. Tell us your date and venue and we will confirm everything, plainly, in one note.
