Notes on filming Dana Point
Height is the story here. The Ritz-Carlton stands a hundred and fifty feet above Salt Creek Beach. Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach sits on a bluff of the same height, spread across 175 acres. From up there the horizon drops below a couple rather than cutting across their shoulders, and a wide frame gets its depth for free, the sand and the surf laid out beneath the vows.
What the height costs you is wind. It comes up the face of the bluff and straight across any open microphone, so on these lawns the audio is protected at the capsule, with lavs and proper windshields, before anyone says a word.
The harbor is the other Dana Point, down at the waterline behind its breakwater. Richard Henry Dana, whose name the town carries, came into this cove in the hide trading days of the 1830s and called it the only romantic spot on the coast. It still frames beautifully from above. For now, much of the waterfront itself sits behind construction fencing, which the next section covers.
Three owners, one short stretch of coast
Dana Point's beaches are split between the county, the state and the city, and each one writes its own rules. Knowing which of them you are standing on comes before the first deposit.
Salt Creek Beach, below the Ritz-Carlton, is run by OC Parks, and its North Shore is one of the county's listed wedding sites, with room for up to five hundred. Doheny State Beach, beside the harbor, belongs to California State Parks, and its 2026 group picnic and event rules are tight. Bookings open two weeks to six months ahead, and never for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July or Labor Day. Beer and wine only, and at a catered event only the park's own caterer may serve. No amplified sound. And for now, no outside vendors or entertainment beyond that caterer. Read literally, that includes a film crew, so it is a question to put to the park before a film is planned around it. Drones are prohibited inside the park, and filming with one can only be requested through a California film permit.
The city's own parks take reservations up to a year out. Setup and cleanup count inside the booked time, and whoever holds the reservation has to carry liability insurance.
The harbor, mid rebuild
Dana Point Harbor is being rebuilt in phases, and 2026 is squarely inside it. Demolition for the new commercial core began in February. The marina is being replaced dock by dock and is more than four fifths of the way through fifteen phases. The Army Corps of Engineers is repairing the west breakwater and dredging. The restaurants and shops on the Wharf are closing for construction through the autumn of 2026, the last of them at the end of October, while the sportfishing, whale watching and Catalina Express counters move into temporary trailers and keep running.
If the weekend touches the harbor, a rehearsal dinner on the water or portraits along the boardwalk, plan from what is standing on your date and not from photographs taken before the fences went up. The public boardwalk and the docks have stayed open through each phase, and the new parking structure gives four hours free.
Two weekends worth checking
The Festival of Whales takes over the harbor for a weekend in early March, the 6th to the 8th in 2026 and the 5th to the 7th in 2027. At the other end of the summer, Ohana Festival fills Doheny State Beach for three days on a late September weekend, which in 2026 was the 25th to the 27th, with music on the sand until half past ten on the Friday and Saturday. Neither one touches a resort lawn. If your date shares a weekend with either, set up the guest room block early and ask your venue what it expects that weekend.
The venues we know

Timing a Dana Point wedding
The marine layer is the local variable. In late spring and early summer, mornings on this coast often start under low cloud that can hang on into late morning or longer, which is why the later slot is the safer one for clear light over the water. Set the ceremony to finish about ninety minutes before sunset and the best of the evening is left for portraits. Sunset itself swings from roughly 4:45 in the first week of December to a few minutes past eight in late June.
At Monarch Beach, add the tram. A beach session there wants thirty-five to forty minutes held clear of anything else, and it belongs after the ceremony, when the light is worth the ride down.
