Notes on the light
The Athenaeum is a private clubhouse in Pasadena, Spanish-colonial in style, with an arched loggia and colonnade that gives a wedding real architectural grandeur without needing much additional styling. It is one of the most striking indoor-outdoor properties we film in the San Gabriel Valley, equally dramatic in daylight and lit up after dark.
The spaces, and how they film
The Colonnade. Corinthian columns and a covered arched walkway anchor the ceremony space, old olive trees standing just beyond it. It needs almost nothing added to look completely finished on camera.
The Evening Reception. The same colonnade carries a reception beautifully after dark, warm light catching the carved capitals overhead in a way that reads as genuinely grand rather than staged.
The film, so far
We have made one film here so far: Chloe & Francis, a ceremony beneath the colonnade followed by a reception that carried on late under the same arches, lit up for the night.
Filming here
Because the colonnade is covered, weather is rarely a concern here, and we plan coverage to take advantage of the space both in daylight and after dark, since the architecture reads dramatically different, and equally well, in both.

Yes, it operates as a private clubhouse in Pasadena, and its Spanish-colonial architecture and grounds can be booked for weddings.

Very well for both. The covered colonnade and carved columns read as dramatic in daylight and equally striking lit up after dark.

Planning notes, and who is allowed to book

Before capacity or cost, there is a question here that does not come up anywhere else on this site: whether you are eligible to book it at all. The Athenaeum is a private faculty club, not a venue for hire.
- Membership
- The club is for members and their guests. A non member can use the banquet facilities only with a member sponsoring them, on a completed sponsorship form approved by the House Committee. That approval is a step in your timeline, not a formality to sort out later.
- Main Dining Room
- Up to one hundred and fifty, under a ceiling stencilled and decorated by Giovanni Battista Smeraldi.
- Main Lounge
- Up to one hundred and fifty theatre style.
- Hall of the Associates
- Up to one hundred and twenty theatre style.
- Also available
- The Library, with its painted barrel vault, and the East and West Rooms and the Card Room for smaller groups. The club’s wedding pages also describe hand painted ceilings, polished wood panelling and chandeliers, though those are not listed as a separate bookable room.
- Food and drink
- All of it comes from the Athenaeum. No outside catering. A weekend facility fee and a weekend food and drink minimum apply, amplified music outdoors stops at ten, and valet is required on weekdays above sixty guests.
- Cost
- Not published. One aggregator models a wedding here into the low forties of thousands, but that is a model rather than a quote and the club does not put rates in public.
- What a private club asks of us
- Photography on the grounds needs approval from your events contact in advance, and anywhere else on the Caltech campus needs a separate photo permit, so we clear both in writing rather than assuming a courtyard is fair game on the day. It is a working members club with people at lunch, and the way to film well in a building like this is to move quietly and stay out of rooms we have not been cleared for. The compensation is a set of interiors that no purpose built venue in Los Angeles can match.
