01The Day

Beside the fountain.

Aurash and Madison were married at Monarch Beach Resort, and this is the frame we kept coming back to: the two of them dipped into a kiss in front of a large tiered stone fountain, clipped hedges squared off behind them, the pale resort architecture holding the whole thing still. Formal geometry, and two people not being remotely formal inside it.

The finished film runs five minutes and seven seconds. That length is deliberate. Long enough to let the day unfold in its own time, short enough that you will actually watch it again, which is the only real test of a wedding film.

Notes on the place.

Monarch Beach rewards patience and punishes a rushed timeline. The ceremony lawns sit on the third floor with the Pacific below them, which means unobstructed sky, no natural relief from an overhead sun, and walking distances that are longer than they look on a floor plan. Filming here, we spend the first part of the day working out distances rather than angles. The reward arrives late. The last of the daylight comes in low off the water, the stone and the pale render go warm, and the courtyard fountain finally becomes worth standing in front of. We build the rest of the schedule around protecting that window.
