01The Day

Deep green shade.

Jadon and Pearl were married in Kingsburg, on the flat farm floor of the San Joaquin Valley. The frame we kept is the two of them closed in by heavy green foliage, her flower crown catching what light gets through, his black tuxedo and bow tie going almost to silhouette against it. In a place this open, shade that dense is worth walking to.

Kingsburg sits at about 302 feet on the banks of the Kings River, twenty-one miles from Fresno, in vineyard and stone fruit country. In a valley this open, shade that dense is the rarest thing on the property, and it is worth walking to.

02Filming at Kingsburg

Notes on filming in Kingsburg.

Kingsburg sits at 302 feet on the floor of the San Joaquin Valley, on the banks of the Kings River, and the ground is as flat as ground gets. That flatness is the brief. No ridge drops the sun early, so golden hour runs long and comes in almost horizontally across the vine rows and the stone fruit blocks. Book the portraits for the back end of it. Midday is the problem: the sun is straight overhead and shade is scarce, because most of what grows here is pruned low. Find the mature trees, usually near the river or an old farmhouse, and work there. Sound is the other tax. Farm roads carry pickups and irrigation pumps, so lavs on both of them and a backup recorder near the officiant.
