Notes on the light
Saddlerock Ranch sits in the Malibu hills, a working ranch with vineyards, oak groves, and dramatic rock outcroppings that give a ceremony a backdrop most venues have to build from scratch. The property runs large and open, so wide shots hold real scale, and the oaks throw filtered shade that keeps portraits usable well before golden hour arrives.
The spaces, and how they film
The Ceremony Lawn. White ranch fencing runs behind the ceremony space with rock formations rising past it, so a wide frame reads as genuinely Californian without needing any additional structure.
The Oak Grove. Old oaks canopy the reception area and take string lights beautifully, carrying the evening once the sun drops behind the hills.
The film, so far
We have made one film here so far: David & Lauren, a ceremony under a floral arch with the ranch fencing and rock outcroppings behind them, followed by a string-lit reception under the oaks.
Filming here
Because the property is open and west-facing, the last hour before sunset does a great deal of the work here. We plan the ceremony to sit far enough ahead of sundown that faces stay lit, then use the oaks for portraits when the open ground gets too bright.
Have you filmed a wedding at Saddlerock Ranch before?+
Yes. David and Lauren's wedding film was made there, and you can watch it on this page.
Is Saddlerock Ranch a working ranch?+
Yes, it is a working ranch and vineyard property in the Malibu hills, which is part of why the landscape reads so distinctly on camera.
Do you travel to Malibu for weddings?+
Malibu is well within our regular range as a Los Angeles based studio.
What is the best time of day to plan a ceremony here?+
Late afternoon. The property is open and faces west, so a ceremony roughly ninety minutes before sunset keeps faces lit and leaves golden hour free for portraits.

Planning notes, and what you bring
Checked July 2026
Saddlerock is closer to land than to a venue, and the rental looks reasonable next to a resort until you total what is not included. The ranch publishes almost nothing itself, so treat every number below as a starting point for your own questions.
- The sites
- Planning guides put the Garden or Main Lawn around five hundred and Oak Grove around four hundred and fifty, with a Vineyard at one hundred or one hundred and fifty and a Camp Cabernet at three or four hundred. A major directory publishes wildly larger numbers for the same sites. Nobody agrees, so ask the ranch which sites are bookable on your date and what each one actually holds.
- Rental
- Around twelve thousand for the Main Lawn or Garden, eight thousand for Oak Grove and six thousand for the Vineyard, with roughly a thousand off for Friday and Sunday. These come from a 2022 guide and competing ranges exist, so confirm before budgeting. 2022 figures
- What you supply
- Kitchen prep space and a generator among them, along with catering, all rentals, entertainment, water and waste removal. There is permanent building on the property, including an ivy covered octagonal stone house, and each site has fixed restrooms and changing rooms. What there is not is a catering kitchen you can use.
- Drink, in full
- You may bring your own hard alcohol at no charge, which is genuinely unusual. Wine is the catch: it has to come from Malibu Family Wines at their price, or you pay corkage. Valet and security are also mandatory through their vendors. Budget all four together rather than reading the alcohol line on its own.
- Curfew
- It depends on the site. Two independent guides put the Garden and Oak Grove at midnight and the Vineyard and Camp Cabernet at eleven. Event rules across the Santa Monica Mountains have been tightening in recent years, so get your own cutoff in writing rather than relying on what a guide said.
- Worth asking
- Whether anything else is booked that day. Sources suggest more than one wedding can run on the property with separate entrances, though they hedge on it.
- What open ground means for the film
- There is no house lighting rig out on these sites, so every lamp in the night footage is one we brought and powered ourselves. We plan that load in advance rather than sharing the catering generator, which is always busier than anyone expects. The upside is freedom of position. No corridors, no fixed sightlines, so the ceremony can face whichever way the light is best on the day.
Saddlerock publishes no wedding pricing, capacity or policy of its own. Everything above is drawn from third party guides and venue managed listings read in July 2026, and the pricing traces to a 2022 article. Sources disagree on which sites exist, on two of the capacities, and on the curfew. We have shown the disagreement rather than picking a number. Confirm all of it with the ranch before you budget.
