A bluff above the water, and the sun going straight down into it. Sound on.

01The Day

Straight west.

Josh and Shayna were married in Newport Beach, and the film ends where the coast does: the two of them on the bluff with the sun dropping into open water behind them.

A west-facing shore gives you a long, generous last hour rather than the abrupt cut you get at a venue with hills behind it. We built their portrait time to sit right inside it.

02Filming at Newport Beach

Notes on the light.

The Orange County coast points west into open ocean, and that single fact makes it one of the most forgiving places in Southern California to film a wedding. There is nothing to take the sun early, so the golden hour genuinely lasts an hour and falls off slowly rather than vanishing. The thing to plan around instead is the middle of the day, when a beach or bluff gives you no shade at all and light comes straight down. We put portraits at the end of the day here almost every time.

03In Newport Beach
Josh turning to see Shayna for the first time at the rope fence above the water, her bouquet of white blooms and greenery in hand.
A gold-framed chalkboard on the sand reading I have found the one whom my soul loves, Song of Solomon 3:4, wooden benches set behind it.
Josh reading his vows into a microphone, Shayna facing him, a groomsman in a mint tie beside them.
Josh and Shayna kissing, her hand with a pearl bracelet at the back of his neck.
Timber pergolas on concrete columns strung with lights, long wooden tables set with greenery beneath them and the bluff falling away to the water behind.
