Notes on the light
Malibu Rocky Oaks is a vineyard estate on a ridge off Kanan Road, and its whole character is exposure. The ceremony ground sits high and open with the mountains dropping away around it and nothing built to interrupt the horizon. That is the appeal, and it is also the whole planning problem.
The light here works differently from the Malibu most couples have been reading about. On the canyon floors inland the sun disappears behind a western wall well before the published sunset, and at a property like Calamigos that can cost the better part of an hour. Up on this ridge the western horizon sits at or near true level for most of the season, so the last hour runs close to the real sunset time. Worth being precise about it: the ridge-top properties nearby hold their light nearly as well. The gain is over the canyon floors, not over all of Malibu.
The spaces, and how they film
The ceremony ground. Published guides describe it as a converted helipad on the high point of the property, and that is what it looks like on camera: a flat circle with the land falling away around it. A wide shot puts a couple small in the frame with layers of mountain going blue behind them. We have not shot that frame anywhere else in the county.
The estate. A stone house sits below the high ground, and the property carries indoor space as well as open air. Worth knowing, because the ridge is no place for a reception after dark.
The vineyard. Planted rows run below the ceremony ground, which gives a portrait session somewhere to go that is not the ridge, and a second texture in a film that would otherwise be all sky.

We have made one film here so far: Jeff & Michele. The frame that carries it is the two of them out on the ridge at the end of the day, small against the mountains.
Filming here
Wind is the constraint and it is the first thing we solve for. It is constant on that high ground, and open-air vows in it will not record cleanly without close microphones and proper wind protection. We fix that at the microphone rather than in the edit, because a vow lost to wind noise cannot be recovered afterwards.
The exposure that causes the sound problem is the same exposure that gives you an open horizon and a sunset that runs to the end. In Malibu those two rarely come together.

When is the best light at Malibu Rocky Oaks?+
The last hour, and it runs longer here than on the canyon floors inland. Down in a canyon a western wall can take the sun the better part of an hour before the published sunset. Up here the western horizon sits at or near true level for most of the season, so the light holds close to the real sunset time. The ridge-top venues nearby hold theirs nearly as well, so this is an advantage over the canyon properties rather than over all of Malibu.

Planning notes, and the numbers

The estate publishes its address and a short description of the property. It does not publish wedding rates, so every figure below comes from wedding industry listings and vendor guides instead, and those guides disagree with each other badly. Where they do, we have said so rather than picking the one we liked. Treat this as the shape of the number, not a quote.
- Where it is
- 340 Kanan Road, Malibu, CA 90265, on a ridge in the Santa Monica Mountains. From the estate’s own contact page.
- The property
- The estate publishes ten planted acres inside a thirty-seven acre plot, family owned since 2003, at an elevation of two thousand feet.
- Whose rules apply
- The parcel carries a Malibu mailing address but sits in unincorporated Los Angeles County rather than inside the City of Malibu. That matters for noise and event conditions, because the county governs here, not the city ordinance people quote for Malibu weddings.
- Capacity
- Most guides converge on one hundred and fifty for a ceremony on the helipad and one hundred and eighty for a seated dinner on the poolside patio. Cvent’s event listing goes higher at four hundred standing and two hundred and fifty seated. Ask the estate for the number that applies to your date and your layout.
- Rental fee
- Published bands run from about ten thousand at the low end to seventy-five thousand at the high end and they do not agree with one another. One guide quotes fifteen to fifty thousand by guest count, another prices the off season lower than April through October, another puts a typical booking at thirty-five to seventy-five. 2026 rate
- Other fees reported
- A refundable security deposit around four thousand, a cleaning fee of five hundred, a site representative and security guard at three hundred and twenty-five, and a two hundred and fifty dollar minimum wine purchase. Two vendor guides publish the same figures, which may mean they share a source rather than that they confirm each other. 2026 rate
- End time
- Two guides report a midnight cutoff for the event itself, with site access until two in the morning for breakdown. Confirm it with the estate.
- Amplified music
- One guide states music is permitted indoors only. Others describe dinner and dancing out by the pool, so the published accounts do not agree. Since the answer changes the whole shape of your evening, it is worth settling with the estate before you plan around the ridge.
- Parking
- Two guides report forty-five to sixty spaces on site with a shuttle. A third says the shuttle is mandatory and on-site parking is for VIPs only. Confirm before you plan guest arrival.
- Season
- Guides point at April through November for weather, though the estate books year round and one guide prices November through March lower. Worth knowing separately: Santa Ana wind and fire risk in this corridor concentrates from late September into December, which overlaps the tail of that window. The Woolsey Fire started on the eighth of November.
