Notes on the light
Calamigos Ranch sits in Malibu Canyon, a working ranch turned event property with redwood groves, olive trees, and a lake at its center. It is one of the most genuinely rustic venues we film in Los Angeles, real wood and real trees rather than a designed approximation of them, and the canyon holds cool, filtered light well into the afternoon even on a hot Malibu day.
The spaces, and how they film
The Redwood Grove. Tall redwoods shade the grounds near the ranch house, giving portraits a filtered, cool light that holds up even at midday.
The Olive Grove. Rows of olive trees provide one of the property's most photographed backdrops, and it's where Andrew and Martha had their first look.
The Lake. A lake sits at the center of the property, giving the wider reception shots real depth and a genuine change of scenery from the grove.
The films, so far
We have made six films here so far: Andrew & Martha, a first look among the olive trees followed by a day that stayed outdoors almost entirely; Ben & Catherine, an unplugged ceremony under the redwoods; Joe & Krislyn, cut short on purpose with the canyon still green behind them; Mariah & Joey, married under the trees in one of the grove sites; Nima & Donya, a tight four-minute film held almost entirely inside the redwood grove; and Tal & Deanna, whose portraits happened out on the ranch road under one of the older oaks. Six weddings is enough to know this property’s rhythm across its different sites, and we would like the seventh to be yours.
Filming here
Because the canyon holds shade and the property is genuinely wooded rather than landscaped, midday light here is far more usable than at an open, sunbaked venue. We take advantage of that for portraits in the redwood grove specifically, since the filtered light there is some of the most flattering we shoot in all year.

Is Calamigos Ranch a real, working ranch?+
Yes, which is part of what makes it distinct. The redwoods, olive trees, and lake are genuine ranch features rather than added landscaping, and it shows on camera.
Do you travel to Malibu for weddings?+
Malibu is well within our regular range as a Los Angeles based studio.
Is the property good for a hot summer wedding?+
Better than most outdoor LA venues. The redwood and olive groves hold shade and filtered light well into the afternoon, which keeps both the day and the film more comfortable than a fully exposed property.

Planning notes, and the numbers

Calamigos prices per head rather than by a flat site fee, which makes it one of the few venues on this site where you can work out your own number before you ever call them. Two routes: their all inclusive package, or venue only and bring your own caterer.
- All inclusive
- Two hundred and sixty-five dollars per person and up, including three hours of beer, wine, champagne and soda with formal dinner service. Saturday evenings and holiday Sundays add thirty dollars per person. 2026 rate
- Venue only
- Ten thousand dollars plus seventy five per person on a Friday or Sunday. Fifteen thousand plus ninety five per person on a Saturday. The ceremony is a further two thousand five hundred on this route. 2026 rate
- Service charge
- Twenty two percent, on top of everything above. Worth adding before you compare this venue to a flat fee property. 2026 rate
- Capacity
- Five hundred seated indoors, eight hundred seated for an outdoor ceremony. Receptions run to five hundred seated inside, six hundred outside, seven hundred standing.
- Catering
- In house, or your own caterer, which may require a buyout. Alcohol the same, with a corkage fee if you bring your own.
- Curfew
- Not published. Malibu properties sit under county noise rules and the answer differs by site, so get it in writing for your specific ceremony and reception areas before the timeline is set.
- What it means for the film
- The ranch roads that connect the sites run under mature oaks the whole way, and five minutes of walking gets you ground that looks nothing like the lawn you booked. It is the cheapest upgrade available here and almost nobody plans for it.
