Notes on the light
The club sits high on the Palisades bluffs with a quarter mile of beach below it, and the Grand Lawn faces straight out at open water. There are no rooftops, no power lines and no neighbouring property in the background, which is rarer in Los Angeles than it sounds. The light is west-facing and unobstructed, so late afternoon comes in warm and level, and the marine layer, when it shows up, works as a giant softbox.
The spaces, and how they film
The Grand Lawn. The Grand Lawn is the ceremony space and the reason to film here. It is a level stretch of green on the edge of the bluff with the Pacific filling the entire background, so a wide shot needs no dressing at all. We shoot the ceremony with the ocean behind you and keep the horizon line honest, because the moment the frame tilts you lose the drop.
The Clubhouse. The 1927 clubhouse is Mediterranean Revival and has kept its bones. The living room has a soaring ceiling and a wall of windows that holds the last of the daylight, which makes it the best room in the building for cocktail hour footage. The dining room takes the evening, with wrought-iron chandeliers doing the work once the sun is gone.
The Beach. The club holds beach frontage below the bluff, so there is a second, completely different look a short walk down: sand, surf and low sun, useful for portraits when the lawn is busy being set for dinner.
The films, so far
We have made five films at the Bel-Air Bay Club so far: Brendan & Jenna, a February wedding that got a clean, bright sunset out of a month that does not always give one; Brennan & Meghan, whose first kiss happened under the club’s rose-covered arch with the ocean horizon dead center; Colin & Michele, shot in the half hour when the sun drops below the palms and comes in flat across the lawn; Kyle & Marissa, one of the longer films we have made anywhere; and Tanner & Michelle, married beneath a floral arch big enough to read as architecture. Five weddings is enough to know this venue by heart: when the light clears the clubhouse roof, how the wind comes off the water, where to stand so the horizon stays level.
Timing the sunset
The whole property faces west, so at the Bel-Air Bay Club the sunset comes to you rather than the other way round. That simplifies planning enormously: the ceremony wants to sit far enough ahead of sundown that faces are still lit, and everything after can chase the color.
A ceremony roughly ninety minutes before sunset is the sweet spot. It leaves golden hour free for portraits on the lawn and the bluff edge, gets you back inside as the light fails, and puts the best twenty minutes of sky in the middle of your cocktail hour rather than the middle of your vows.
